$395 12X16 Mixed Media

I had fun creating this abstract mixed media painting, loosely based on an autumn leaf.  I used a wet on wet watercolor technique and then grabbed my  my Micron and calligraphy pens to find the details.   I like to find little creatures and images that are created by the blending of colors and values….and inevitably, crazy little faces often reveal themselves.

This painting was inspired by a photograph taken by my friend Samantha who captured the striking skyline of leafless trees beyond her enormous loft windows. I used acrylic paint and spray webbing to capture the infinite twigs and small branches that appear against the stark sky. The paper is industrial ink jet paper sealed with an archival satin finish varnish and mounted on 2 inch foam board. This painting was on loan for six months hanging in the Hermes International Boardroom in their Boston office. 34” X 47”

Birch trees. Birch bark.  To me, one of mother nature’s loveliest creations.  A few years back, we were hiking and came across a number of toppled birches with peeling bark. I was enticed by the texture of the bark and wanted to paint pastels on it…but could never manage to produce any vibrant colors with pastels, so into the barn they went….until last month. I have been using acrylics and pen and ink to try to pull out the images that I find. Fun. How to display them? Still working on that. For the moment, using thinner birch “canvases” and mounting them on fabric before framing them. I welcome any suggestions!

As August comes to a close, did you ever notice how the first few colorful leaves that cross your path stop you in your tracks…and,  perhaps,  make you stare for a bit…and maybe even inspire you to stoop down to snatch them up to examine them more closely?  Seems that this simple symbol of the change of seasons is special…and dramatic…and do you remember proudly ironing them between two sheets of waxed paper?
